Taxonomy
Meniscomys was named by Cope (1878). Its type is Meniscomys hippodus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Protogaulus by Riggs (1899); it was synonymized subjectively with Allomys by Hay (1902), Stock (1935).

It was assigned to Meniscomyinae by Wang (1987); and to Aplodontidae by Cope (1879), McGrew (1941), Rensberger (1983), McKenna and Bell (1997).
