Mesogaulus was named by Riggs (1899). It is not extant. Its type is Mesogaulus paniensis.

It was assigned to Mylagaulidae by Riggs (1899), Hay (1902), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Mylagaulinae by Lu et al. (2016).
