Hunanospongia was named by Qian and Ding (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. It is not extant. Its type is Hunanospongia delicata.
It was assigned to Hexactinellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protospongiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
