Mertensites hantoniensis was named by Wanklyn (1869). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Gleichenia (Mertensia) hantonensis by Gardner and Ettingshausen (1880); it was recombined as Dicranopteris hantoniensis by Chandler (1963).
