Taxonomy
Taxites planus was named by Feistmantel (1879). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Raghavapuram, which is in a Jurassic fluvial horizon in India.

It was recombined as Elatocladus plana by Seward (1919), Sitholey (1944), Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Chandra and Tewari (1991).
