Phasianus bulgaricus was named by Boev (2020). Its type specimen is NMNHS 15143, a limb element (Proximal ulna), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Gorna Sushitsa Village (GS8), which is in a Turolian terrestrial horizon in Bulgaria.
