Taxonomy
Metaphiomys was named by Osborn (1908). Its type is Metaphiomys beadnelli.
It was assigned to Eomyidae by Osborn (1908); to Thryonomyidae by López-Antoñazas and Sen (2005); to Phiomyidae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Stevens et al. (2006); to Hystricognathi by Coster et al. (2012); and to Thryonomyoidea by Sallam and Seiffert (2019).
