Mycterops was named by Cope (1886). Its type is Mycterops ordinatus. It is the type genus of Mycteropidae, Mycteropoidea.
It was assigned to Eurypterida by Strimple and Moore (1971); and to Mycteropidae by Størmer (1955), Schram (1984), Lamsdell et al. (2010) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
