Litodontomys was named by Loomis (1914). It is not extant. Its type is Litodontomys chubutensis.
It was assigned to Dasyproctidae by Wood and Patterson (1959), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Dipodidae by Bendukidze et al. (2009); and to Cephalomyidae by Busker and Dozo (2018), Busker et al. (2020).
