Steiromys was named by Ameghino (1887).

It was assigned to Cercolabidae by Ameghino (1894); to Erethizontidae by Fields (1957), Patterson (1958), Walton (1997), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Erethizontoidea by Arnal and Vucetich (2015).
