Gobiolagus was named by Burke (1941). Its type is Gobiolagus tolmachovi.
It was assigned to Mytonolaginae by Burke (1941); to Lagomorpha by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Leporidae by Meng and Hu (2004) and Meng et al. (2005); to Strenulagidae by Averianov and Lopatin (2005) and Lopatin and Averianov (2006); and to Palaeolagidae by Fostowicz-Frelik et al. (2012).
