Mytonolagus was named by Burke (1934). It is not extant. Its type is Mytonolagus petersoni.

It was assigned to Mytonolaginae by Burke (1941); to Palaeolaginae by Dawson (1958); and to Leporidae by Burke (1934), McKenna and Bell (1997).
