Alphacyathus was named by Bedford and Bedford (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l Cm Boto-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1243]. It is the type genus of Alphacyathidae, Alphacyathoidea.
It was assigned to Ajacicyathida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Alphacyathidae by Kerner et al. (2011), Debrenne et al. (2015).
