Scalaria (Opalia) mathewsonii was named by Gabb (1864). It is extant. Its type specimen is ANSP 4220..

It was recombined as Epitonium (Confusiscala) mathewsonii by Stewart (1927); it was recombined as Opalia (Confusiscala) mathewsonii by Durham (1937); it was recombined as Opalia mathewsonii by Squires and Saul (2003).
