Testudo caretta was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Caretta caretta by Rafinesque (1814), Hay (1930), Berry and Lynn (1936), Chesi and Delfino (2006), Pérez-García et al. (2008), Pérez-García and Ortega (2011), van Dijk et al. (2014) and Rhodin et al. (2017).
