Asterocyathus was named by Vologdin (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-l Cm Boto-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1243]. Its type is Asterocyathus salairicus. It is the type genus of Asterocyathidae.
It was assigned to Ajacicyathida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asterocyathidae by Debrenne et al. (2015).
