Sanitherium was named by von Meyer (1866). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ruminantia by Lydekker (1876); to Suidae by Carroll (1988); to Sanitheriidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Palaeochoerinae by van der Made (1997).
