Thinohyus was named by Marsh (1875).
It was synonymized subjectively with Palaeochoerus by Cope (1879); it was synonymized subjectively with Perchoerus by Hay (1902), Matthew (1907), Cope and Matthew (1915) and Pearson (1923).
It was assigned to Tayassuinae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Tayassuidae by Marsh (1875), Carroll (1988), Wright (1998), Prothero (2009) and Prothero (2021).
