Masilabune was named by Tobien (1980). It is not extant. Its type is Masillabune martini.

It was corrected as Masillabune by Hooker (1986), Erfurt and Metais (2007).

It was assigned to Haplobunodontidae by Hooker (1986), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Choeropotamidae by Sudre and Lecomte (2000), Erfurt and Metais (2007).
