Protosqualus barringtonensis was named by Guinot et al. (2013). Its type specimen is NHMUK P.67000, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Barrington Channel, which is in a Cenomanian carbonate chalk in the United Kingdom.
