Berardius minimus was named by Yamada et al. (2019) [Berardius minimus differs from all of its congeners by having the following unique characters: remarkably smaller body size of physically mature individuals, proportionately shorter beak, darker body colour subsequent noticeable cookie-cutter shark bites.]. It is extant. Its type specimen is NSMT-M35131, a skeleton (skull, mandible, and most of post of postcranial skeleton ).
