Squalus balsvikensis was named by Siverson (1993). Its type specimen is LO 5065 T, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sample S92-2-2-MS, Balsvík quarry, which is in a Maastrichtian carbonate chalk in Sweden.
