Pyktes triphyllon was named by Popenoe (1983). Its type specimen is UCLA 59053, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCLA loc. 4106, Clover Creek, which is in a Santonian marine sandstone in the Redding Formation of California.
