Taxonomy
Fringilla mexicana was named by Müller (1776). It is extant.

It was recombined as Carpodacus mexicanus by Wetmore (1940) and Miller and DeMay (1942); it was recombined as Carpodacus (Burrica) mexicanus by Wetmore (1956); it was recombined as Haemorhous mexicanus by Clements et al. (2017).
