It was assigned to Podicipedidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Gaviinae by Storer (1956); to Colymboidinae by Harrison and Walker (1976), Cheneval (1984); to Gaviidae by Carroll (1988), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Mlikovsky (2002), Mayr (2004); and to Gaviiformes by Mayr (2005).
