Palauchelys montellanoi

Specific name is in honor of Dra. Marisol Montellano Ballesteros, the first female vertebrate paleontologist in Mexico.

Taxonomy
Palauchelys montellanoi was named by López-Conde et al. (2021). Its type specimen is IGM-11517, a partial shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Don Evaristo coal mine, which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian delta plain /coal in the Olmos Formation of Mexico. It is the type species of Palauchelys.

López-Conde et al. 2021IGM-11517 differs from the other members of Bothremydini by the following character combination: oval carapace, reaching its maximum width at the level of the seventh peripherals; very shallow nuchal notch; wider than long nuchal plate, sub-octagonal in shape; six neurals; antero-lateral end of the first vertebral not exceeding half of the posterior width of the first pair of peripherals; anterior sulcus of the fourth vertebral on the middle area of the fifth neural, and posterior sulcus on the seventh pair of costals; medial edge of the first pair of marginals shorter than the lateral edge; overlap of the first pair of marginals in half of the nuchal lateral margins; wider than long mesoplastra; absence of medial contact of the humerals due to the development of a large intergular, reaching the pectorals; and posterior margin of the intergular near the posterior part of the entoplastron.
