Derivation of the name: From Erquelinnes, the type locality of this species.

Taxonomy
Axestemys erquelinnensis was named by Perez-Garcia and Smith (2021). Its type specimen is IRSNB R86, a partial skeleton (carapace and the dorsal vertebrae), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grand-Reng, which is in a Selandian terrestrial horizon in the Tienen Formation of Belgium.

A. Perez-Garcia and T. Smith 2021Member of Axestemys defined by the following exclusive character within this genus: the presence of two pairs of suprascapular fontanelles. It shows the following shell characters, recognized as interspecifically variable within this genus: longer than wide carapace; nuchal callosity restricted to the medial part of the plate; costal sculpturing not reaching the carapace margins; long anterior and medial free ribs.
