Taxonomy

Anchitherium (Hypohippus) was named by Leidy (1858) [named as a subgenus of Anchitherium by Leidy 1858; raised to genus level]. Its type is Anchitherium (Hypohippus) affinis.

It was reranked as Hypohippus by Leidy (1869), Hay (1902), Gidley (1904), Gidley (1907), Scott (1913), Osborn (1918), Stirton (1940), Forsten (1975), Carroll (1988), Prothero and Schoch (1989), MacFadden (1998).

It was assigned to Anchitherium by Leidy (1858); to Anchitheridae by Leidy (1869); to Hyracotheriinae by Hay (1902); to Equidae by Gidley (1904), Scott (1913), Osborn (1918), Stirton (1940), Carroll (1988); and to Anchitheriinae by Gidley (1907), Forsten (1975), Prothero and Schoch (1989), MacFadden (1998).
