Taxonomy
Lophiotherium was named by Marsh (1871). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Orotherium by Marsh (1872); it was synonymized subjectively with Pachynolophus by Roger (1896); it was synonymized subjectively with Orohippus by Matthew (1899), Hay (1902), Granger (1908), Stirton (1940), Kitts (1957).

It was assigned to Anchitheridae by Leidy (1873); to Hyracotheriinae by Cope (1881); to Equidae by Marsh (1871), Carroll (1988); to Palaeotheriidae by Hooker (1986), Prothero and Schoch (1989), Remy (2017); and to Pachynolophinae by Remy et al. (2019).
