Taxonomy

Protitan was named by Granger and Gregory (1943). Its type is Protitanotherium grangeri.

It was assigned to Epimanteoceratinae by Granger and Gregory (1943); to Brontotheridae by Carroll (1988), Prothero and Schoch (1989); and to Brontotheriina by Mihlbachler (2008).

Synonyms

Protitan cingulatus was named by Granger and Gregory (1943). Its type specimen is AMNH 26412, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Mihlbachler (2008).
Protitan major was named by Huang and Zheng (2004). Its type specimen is IVPP V13802, a maxilla, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lumeiyi Village, which is in an Eocene terrestrial horizon in the Lumeiyi Formation of China.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Mihlbachler (2008).
