Kaltatocyathus was named by Zhuravleva et al. (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-l Cm Boto-u
Rozanov in Zhurvleva, Konyushkov & Rozanov 1964]. It is the type genus of Kaltatocyathidae.
It was assigned to Ajacicyathida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kaltatocyathidae by Kerner et al. (2011), Debrenne et al. (2015).
