Taxonomy

Triplopus was named by Cope (1880). Its type is Triplopus cubitalis.

It was assigned to Triplopidae by Cope (1881); to Lophiodontidae by Scott (1883); to Triplopodinae by Hay (1902), Peterson (1919) and Simpson (1945); to Hyracodontinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Prothero (1998); and to Hyracodontidae by Cope (1880), Scott (1913), Radinsky (1966), Carroll (1988), Holbrook (1999), Wang et al. (2016) and Lofgren et al. (2020).
