Plesiorycteropus was named by Filhol (1895). It is not extant. Its type is Plesiorycteropus madagascariensis.

It was assigned to Plesiorycteropodinae by Patterson (1975); to Orycteropodidae by Pickford (1975), Carroll (1988); to Bibymalagasia by MacPhee (1994); and to Tenrecoidae by Buckley (2013).

Synonyms
  • Majoria was named by Thomas (1915).

    It was synonymized subjectively with Plesiorycteropus by MacPhee (1994).
