Chascacocolius oscitans was named by Houde and Olson (1992). Its type specimen is USNM 433913, a skeleton (formerly articulated partial skeleton, including the mandible, right quadrate, basihyal, several cervical and thoracic vertebrae, furcula, right and left coraco), and it is a 3D body fossil.
