Taxonomy
Opalia cavea was named by Squires and Saul (2003). Its type specimen is LACMIP 12990 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LACMIP loc. 2853, Arroyo Santa Catarina, which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian marine horizon in the Rosario Formation of Mexico.
