Cedrus was named by Trew (1757). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gernandt et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Abietineae by Knowlton (1919); to Abietoideae by Gernandt et al. (2016); and to Pinaceae by Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Chauhan (1991), Liu et al. (1996), Ran et al. (2018).
