Victorlemoineia was named by Ameghino (1901). Its type is Victorlemoineia labyrinthica.

It was assigned to Meniscotheriidae by Ameghino (1901); to Proterotheriidae by Simpson (1935); to Sparnotheriodontidae by Cifelli (1983); and to Macraucheniidae by Simpson (1948), Paula Couto (1952), Carroll (1988).
