Taxonomy
Griphodon was named by Anthony (1924). Its type is Griphodon peruvianus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Propyrotherium by Lucas (1986).

It was assigned to Pyrotheriidae by Anthony (1924), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Pyrotheria by Shockey and Anaya-Daza (2004).
