Taxonomy
Pyrotherium was named by Ameghino (1888). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Pyrotheridae.

It was assigned to Pyrotheridae by Ameghino (1894), Ameghino (1897); and to Pyrotheriidae by Lydekker (1894), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997).
