Leptoscopus progressus was named by Schwarzhans (1980). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is S137/f499 - Rifle Butts Fm, Pukeuri, which is in an Altonian coastal sandstone in the Rifle Butts Formation of New Zealand.
It was recombined as Awamoa progressa by Schwarzhans (2019).
