Borkenia philippeni was named by Karl (2018). Its type specimen is NMM / LS PW 2008/1-LS, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Eckfeld Maar (NHMM collection), which is in a MP 13 crater lake siltstone/shale in the Eifel Formation of Germany.
