Asterostemma was named by Ameghino (1889). Its type is Asterostemma depressa.

It was assigned to Hoplophoridae by Ameghino (1889); to Glyptodontidae by Scott (1903), Carroll (1988); to Propalaehoplophorinae by Hoffstetter (1958), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Propalaehoplophoridae by Ameghino (1891), Ameghino (1894), Fernicola (2008).
