Doedicurus was named by Burmeister (1874). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Doedicuridae by Ameghino (1889), Brown (1912), Rovereto (1914); to Glyptodontidae by Cope (1889), Lydekker (1894), Carroll (1988); to Doedicurini by Fernicola (2008); and to Doedicurinae by Hoffstetter (1958), Soibelzon et al. (2010).
