Parapercis depressidorsalis was named by Schwarzhans (2019). Its type specimen is NMNZ S.47552,, an otolith, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Trap Creek, which is in a Waitakian marine siltstone in the Mount Harris Formation of New Zealand.
