Pronothrotherium was named by Ameghino (1907). It is not extant. Its type is Pronothrotherium typicum.
It was assigned to Megalonychidae by Rovereto (1914); to Megatheriidae by Carroll (1988); to Nothrotheriidae by Amson et al. (2017); and to Nothrotheriinae by Hay (1930), Gaudin (1995), Varela et al. (2019).
