Taxonomy
Platyodon piedraensis was named by Wiedey (1929). Its type specimen is LSJU 521 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LSJU loc. 441, Corral de Piedra, which is in a Miocene coastal sandstone in the Vaqueros Formation of California.
