Paramys atavus was named by Jepsen (1937). Its type locality is Bear Creek, which is in a Clarkforkian terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Acritoparamys atavus by Korth (1984), Ivy (1990).
