Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. J. M. Calede and S. S. B. Hopkins 2012Smallest member of the genus Alphagaulus; adult postorbital index (0.40) larger than in A. tedfordi (0.25), similar to A. vetus (0.36); dentary with posterodorsally to anteroventrally wide and strong angular process; dentition most similar to that of A. vetus; no more than six fossettes on both P4 and p4 unlike any other species of the genus Alphagaulus; fewer fossetids on aver- age on p4 than in any other species of the genus; only two lakes in the posterior lobe of the P4 in early stage of wear; parafossette occupies complete anterior lobe of P4, overlaps both lobes; in late stage of wear, only parafossette occupies anterior lobe; all other fossettes in larger posterior lobe of P4 are on either side of parafossette except for metafossette, which is roughly aligned with posterior branch of parafossette; pattern of fossettids unlike that of A. tedfordi in orientation, and distribution: five main fossettids aligned anteroposteriorly, three on lingual side with, from anterior to posterior, parafossettid, mesofossetid, and metafossetid, and two on buccal side with, from anterior to posterior, protofossetid and hypofossetid; occlusal outline of mid-wear P4 does not retain outline of mesostyle; metafossette simple at every wear stage; postcranial skeleton relatively gracile unlike A. tedfordi.
