Taxonomy
Acanthias stehlini was named by Leriche (1938). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is El Mene de Acosta, which is in a Chattian marine horizon in the El Mene Formation of Venezuela.

It was recombined as Squalus stehlini by Casier (1958).
