Ptilodus cochranensis was named by Russell (1929).

It was recombined as Ectypodus cochranensis by Simpson (1937) and Russell (1967); it was recombined as Anconodon cochranensis by Van Valen and Sloan (1966), Krause (1977), Krause and Gingerich (1983) and Scott et al. (2013).
